Heat plates

I have a brooder plate. The lowest temp is 100 degrees fahrenheit. My question is how does this work with lowering the temp for the chicks by 5 degrees??? Will making it higher work?

A brooder plate is usually radiant heat. The chicks will go under it for a warm up as needed.

Raising the heat plate higher as they grow and get taller is a very good idea.

Heat plates work on contact, so the reason you raise it is because as the chicks get larger they won't fit under it easily if it's too low. There is no "5 degrees a week" at play here - the chicks will simply duck under to warm up, and otherwise be away from it when they don't need heat.
