Good Morning; first time writer, long time reader. :) We live in PHX area, and it was 120 last week; one of my 6 month old gals was wilted to the point of death (this was 6/22 afternoon). Swooped her up, brought her in the house sat her in some water, gave her electrolytes, and held her for a while and she fell asleep. She was so droopy and legs stiff as a board, we thought for sure she would die that night; we put her in a nice cool spot overnight just waiting. It was horrible. Next morning (6/23), she was laying on her side, an egg by her feet and she was still breathing! I picked her up (she was semi alert), gave her more electrolytes, held her, and put her in a dog crate with soft bedding so she could rest. By the end of the day she was eating soft foods, and I started giving her baby vitamin drops (no iron). By Saturday 6/24 she was standing up, but walking was (and still is) a chore. Her right wing and leg seam very weak and she walks like Frankenstein (lumbering along) for about 10-14 steps and then it looks like she can't hold the weight of her own body, struggling to hold herself upright (shaking from the weight of it all) and then literally plops down on her haunches.
She is back in the run in a sectioned of area, but 2 (of my 6)hens seem as though they are literally trying to kill her. I let he be with the other 3 and they are all happy. She really wanted to bed with them last night, so I put her in with the girls in the coop, and all went well. This morning, those 2 are back at it, getting on her. My questions are; We are going on vacation for 5 days, should I take her with us (we are camping on our own land and she would have a safe place to stay) or keep her in her sectioned off area and make her a nesting box and place to sleep of her own (the pet sitter can't be here at bed time and waking to keep her away from the mean girls)? Also, if I take away the mean girls for a couple of days and bring them back would that keep them from picking on her?
Any advice would be appreciated. I'm really worried about taking her away for that long and trying to get her back with the flock.

Thank you, that is what I'm thinking too. I have 4 days until we go on vacation, I need to do something with those mean girls.

The meanies are just being chickens. The ill hen is a weakness to the flock. I'd keep the ill gal separated until she's stronger and more able to move around. You'll need to do a reintroduction again, but as long as she's in a weakened state, she's going to be picked on. So if it were me, I'd keep her separate or put her with another hen that gets along with her and doesn't pick on her. Then let her gain some strength.

Thank you; I am getting her special area all set up and I will keep her with her sister ( got them at the same time).
