Heat tolerant chickens

Welcome. I love this site. I am new to raising chickens too. I have learned valuable information from this website. Everyone has been so nice and helpful. I always find an answer to my questions.

Hi- hot summer area here too, 110-120F summers.

Would NOT recommend welsumers, as every roo dropped dead once it got above 110.. hens tolerated it better but still they too did not do so great once it hit 120.

Penedesencas should do better, they seem lighter in type. Some people say some lines really dark eggs, as dark as the better lines of marans etc.

Too many people are not able to get past their appearence but honestly, naked necks(turkens) do extremely well in heat, even the big heavy ones. They are a wonderful breed, personality wise and are good producers of eggs and meat. Mine lay through the summer, even when it is above 110.

Ok, thanks! I would love to get naked necks, but I can't find any in my area that are for sale. Plus my family won't let me get them because they think that they are ugly. Personally, I think that they are cool.

So many times, someone will unwillingly get a naked neck chick as part of chick order or surprise from egg but they end up really loving them.

Sneak them in if you can! ;)

There is someone in AZ doing their own breed project- Aloha chickens, the person decided to use a NN hen in one of the lines so there are some very colorful NN floating around in AZ Do a search for Alohas to find the thread and breeder.

I only have 4 hens: 2 Naked neck Turkens, one Australorp, one Welsummer.

I've got to agree with you about Welsummers not being heat tolerant. Mine does OK, but we need to watch her.

I can't get over how heat tolerant the Australorp is! She never pants, it was 103 here 2 days ago.
She goes into the coop when it is 95f and lays her egg, comes out w/o panting. In fact, I have never seen her pant.
I don't understand how the black Australorp is so heat tolerant (less down underneath?), but that's the way it is.

My Turkens do well, too, but I have seen them panting. Still, they as long as they have shade that has been hosed down, and a few cool treats, they are fine. They have built in air conditioning!
And I will also confirm that they are VERY sweet and fit into my small flock well. They are not aggressive.

I've found over several decades of raising Australorps that you can tell people how heat tolerant they are, but they often have a hard time believing it until they raise the Australorps themselves in a hot climate. Afterward, they are invariably amazed at how heat tolerant Australorps are.)
