My first year with my own, got a couple 3 of each breed I thought would work . I have 1 SLW and 2 GLW. I'm not feeling it. Pretty birds. They seem better with the heat than the marans or orps, but blah, not friendly, not social just chickens. We all have criteria right?

I think you'll be very happy with the Australorps. In addition to being very hardy (both heat and cold), they are very calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them) and are excellent layers of large, brown eggs.

Awesome! What breeds? Mine are crosses between a black copper Marans and a RIR and Black australorps.

Wow, those sound like awesome breeds. I really want to get some Black Copper Marans myself, and Australorps too.

My eggs that are going to hatch today are three barnyard mixes and one silkie egg. We broke the silkie egg open earl, but it isn't bleeding bad and it is still inside of the shell (the very top is just removed) so I have it wrapped in a paper towel and am hoping it will get the strength to get out. Its a tiny little thing!

I'm sure I will, thanks! ThecWyandottes just have NO personality and just average all around, I want spectacular lol.. I overlooked them this spring because I ASSUMED that they would be too hot because they were black lol... Goes to show not to judge a chicken by its color ;)

It's terrible lol... I was just going to come on here to figure out the BRs that I got this spring; somehow I almost hit triple digits and now into 6 different species lol; just got the OK from DH to study up to incubate ostrich next spring... I think these 15 I just ordered are to sidetracked me until then lol... YOU PEOPLE!!! :p

Seriously, I just joined to look see if I had ended up with a BR cockerel...

You're welcome.

Very helpful information. But I'm not in the desert dry heat. I'm in south Florida, hot and very humid. What breed is best for the Miami/ Ft. Lauderdale area?

This thread is about a decade old. Might want to start yourself a thread here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/general-breed-discussions-faq.14/

Also, you could make a new thread in this same forum, https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/new-member-introductions.44/ so we could all greet you too!
