Heat Warning Today, 99 in the Shade

103 here at 7 p.m. Madness! No air movement whatsoever. A gazillion percent humidity. It's still supposed to be 90 at 11 p.m. tonight. Hope the fan does the trick for them. Tomorrow a few less degrees forecast (big deal) and then it is supposed to get better (89, I'll take it!).

I know people who refuse to provide fans in this weather - and their hens are open mouth breathing and clearly suffering - I don't get it. Seems cruel to me.

Hope everyone's feathered friends will make out okay!! (and their humans too

ok, I just have to know.....WHO OPENED THE DOOR TO HELL???? Oh myyyyyy its hot! Electrolytes....cold cucumber...cantelope....and several water changes. I just came in from the coop.....102 in there. Why wont they go outside?? Its only 99 out there!! Several water stations each...wadeing pools.....fans...all I can do now, is pray they make it. And the poor broody sittin on a nest! Jeesh!

Hey Bird Brain, were down on the Kenai Peninsula. I'm going up to Fairbanks next week there forcasting it up into the 80's.
I'd rather have the cold winters over hot summers anyday. theres only so much clothing you can take off in public but you can always put on another sweater.

Well when I started vocalizing about the humid heat inside the coop, mother nature decided to do something about it. The thunderstorm that we had last night ripped part of the materials off our coops. So now the chickens still have the heat and humidity, but now they have A LOT of air circulation. Just trying to figure out how to temporarly fix the coop cause I'm listening to thunder outside right now. Poor neighbor who farms beside our house has a bunch of his seed corn laying on the ground from the storm. Suppose to finally have some relief after 7pm tonight though. I think it might get into the 80's after today but still have the high humidity. I'm wishing the whole house had central air rather than just the family room.

Sorry to read about your coop damage. At least they got more venaltion, so mabey they feel better anyways. Depending on the damage maybe you can throw some tarps over it to help protect from the rain?

It's supposed to calm down here today too,

but not till this evening. That's if the weather man is right. It's the only job where you get to be wrong and still get paid.

It's 94 here today with 70% humidity. Still very hot and sticky, but my girls seem better.

ok, so after I posted.....we got a HUGE storm! Wind.....rain....lots and lots of lightening...thunder that scared the beejesus outta me....the whole nine yards! It did drop the temp....from 101, to 73. Whew! But, the humidity is still there...and now today, back in the 100's....with all this water and wet ground, Y U K ! Come on WINTER!!!!

Newchickenmom&kids ..... THAT must be where all the wind is coming from today! Ohhh, nice! More rain on the way here?? I hope so...maybe a cool down as well!?? Let us pray!!

Thanks for the soaker hose idea, I'm going to try that. My neighbor probably thinks I'm crazy ... half a dozen extension cords heading out to a fan in the yard ...

One of my RIR's would NOT come out of the coop and was laying behind the waterer, in the one tiny patch of sun in the coop, panting and lying all stretched out. I finally tossed her out ... with the ground wet and the tarps for shade and the fan on it was cooler outside.

I have heard that chicks exposed to heat stress at an early age handle it better when they become older. I don't know about that but ...

I'm looking for cooler temps too. Not quite 100 here, but still miserable. I walked outside at 8am, just took a few steps, and my arms were completely wet with sweat just standing there. And I had to move the run this week. I've been outside working on it in the heat of the day for the past two days. Ugh!

"WHO OPENED THE DOOR TO HELL????"
Too funny --- really makes you wonder, tho...
Another 107+ degree day.
It is hotter here than it has ever been in recorded history.
The chickens are doing great in the heat. The rabbits don't take the heat as well and I've been giving them frozen water bottles to cool off.

Sorry to hear about the roof damage.

Stay cool!
Lisa
