Heat

The general rule of thumb is to start your brooder temp at 95 degrees and slow back it down by 5 degrees per week if memory serves. You can actually watch the chick’s behavior for clues as to whether it’s too hot or cold by watching if they huddle together under the heater (means it’s too cold for them), or if they spread out to the sides (its too hot). They should be comfortably spread out in an evenly spaced fashion and that will mean that the temp is just right. Check out The Chicken Chick’s website for more info and good luck!

This scenario does not apply to heat plates, only lamps...plate don't heat the air or floor.
With heat plates the chicks need to be able to touch their back to it adjust the height of plate and watch for behaviors.
