my 4 new babies r just a week old, we have a 250w heat lamp, which i am thinkings is to warm, they dont seem to go to sleep near the lamp always away from it, should i get a smaller bulb or turn off heat lamp for a short time

Is it warm where you are? If so, I would recommend about a 40 watt.

250 is a bit high, that is why they are away from it.

would that be a 40 watt heat bulb or just a normal bulb (sorry to sound silly)

Another easy fix would be to just get a cheap thermometer. The temp at one inch above brooder floor at one week should be about 90 degrees. If they are avoiding the light, it is iprobably too hot. You could always just raise the light higher.
