i'm thinking about buying one of these for my Girls...but..is it worth it?....right now i have a 1 gal waterer in the coop for the late night drinkers....and have a 3 gal galvenized one out side....so does any one have one of theses heated waterers and how do you like it?

I've got the 3 gallon heated waterer and I love it. I actually have one for each pen. Haven't had any trouble with it. The heated dog bowls work just fine, too, but I have roos with VERY large wattles, and I don't want them dipping those huge things into the warm water, only to freeze later...

Lynn, i just looked at your pics!! man do i miss home!! i miss the nights of a good winter storm! i'm also concernd about cleaning it but then again my chickens get acv in ther water so there shouldn't be that of a build up on the inside.....

I use ACV all year, and I find that its anti-bacterial properties are great, so when you wipe it clean it's *squeaky clean*. It's chilly here this week, and a rain storm on the way. The days are getting shorter and I'm waiting for the hens to have their first adult moult. Yep, winter is looming!

Remember not to use ACV in a galvanized waterer- the acid leaches out the zinc and can poison the chickens. You can use it in plastic waterers, tho'.

I use a heated dog water bowl too, with a gallon grape juice jug sitting in it, with 2 holes drilled 1/2 inch up from the bottom and across from each other. I fill it up, holding my fingers on the 2 holes, put the lid back on, and sit it in the bowl. I don't know where you could get a 3 gallon jug for this kind of set up, but it might be possible. I unplug it and wash it every few days.

I think I would like a 3 gal plastic heated waterer, and eventually my electric dog bowl will fail, so I'll be looking locally- it' costs too much to ship here...

We're getting cool night here and there was snow in Labrador last week...
