Heated dog dish as nest

oh go check the hygrometers in the garage leftover from hatching season. they say it's 28 degrees in the garage
Hygrometers do not measure temperature.

And the confusion continues.

Are you trying to break her broodiness?
Why the need for heat?

I had my only two purebred pullets in this pen and we had to go to California for my mother's funeral which was beautiful .she was 99 and a half .we had the birds forted up in the garage with plenty of food, very deep litter and auto watering system which had handled previous very cold weather without freezing.
the weather said it was going to be 30-48. while we were gone it spiked down to minus zero. there was nothing we could do. we hoped everything would be okay. when we got back 3 days after the the Arctic blast hit, the show hen was dead. but this other hen who has too much Feathering to be show quality, was okay . the water that we had carefully set up had not been able to handle the cold and frozen. I have one bird left for my whole hatching season. so we'll see how it goes .
thank you so much for everything.
Karen

There is one bright side all this .while we were gone another Sussex person bought most of the flock that I was trying to recreate as the owner decided to disperse the flocked for health reasons.
So this rare gene pool does exist with another breeder .the gentleman dispersing the flock (who's Foundation I created )still has a couple Birds left . so I'm going over this week to see what he's got and if I can add three or four more birds from his this year's hatching season to my hen. we'll see how it goes . thumbs up and hoping for the best.

Hi,
These ones I have measure temperature and humidity .so she's a lone hen. I was worried she was going to get too cold then she got broody. but she's doing better now. I think it's not as cold as I thought it was down there. so I'm just going to watch her and see how things go. she did get up and around today she hasn't been laying eggs. maybe this broodiness is going away . I don't know. but she's doing better and I'm encouraged about that .
thank you,
Karen

Ah, ok.
I'm breaking a broody pullet...temps are in the teens F.
She's spending most the days in the breaker crate,
but I do have a 2x4 in there for her to stand on.
