heated dog water dish question

Don't worry....I use heated buckets for my very orally fixated dog and my sheep, which will chew anything to see if it is food. I now have the heated dish for my chickens. If these three groups do not chew/peck their way through these coil-covered cords, nothing will!

I have a heated water bowl in my main henhouse, another one in the mobile chicken tractor, and a third one in a little "cave" I built out of bales of pine shavings for a homeless cat who has adopted me and my chickens as its family.

They work great!

My chickens have not had a problem with the metal clad cord. And these bowls DO keep water from freezing. I have one heated bowl in each place, and the other waterers are not heated. After a freezing night (and we've had two that went into the single digits), I find the unheated bowls frozen solid, but the heated bowls do not have any ice whatsoever.

I bought a small-cheap crock pot (under $10) and I run it on low, not continuously, as needed with a timer. Works good for me.

We save those plastic buckets that fruit or ice cream come in. Nice, squat, 2 gallon pail. Not particularly sturdy, but heck, they're free.

Perfect for taking out a bucket of water and placing it in the heated dog dish. Works like a charm and I can just carry in a fresh bucket, and take out the old each morning. BTW, should be +1 tonight. No problem.

I use a heated dog dish. I bought it at Wal Mart for under $20. My hens don't bother the cord at all. The cord is pretty sturdy. A good thing about the heated dog dish, it will heat only when needed. I think it said when the temp. gets to around freezing it will turn on.

I do the same, but with a 1 gallon milk jug. Just the right amount to refill the bowl.
