Heated Roosts

LOL sorry but a heated roost? Like Pat I can only imagine the smell of the carpet ala poo. Now add some warmth to that poosicle. Yummy

Heat tape is save if used properly and this is NOT properly. I've been known to be "resourceful" actually it is my claim to fame around here but I do have my limits and this is definetly beyond them.

I have heated roosts. I have the luxury of an outdoor wood boiler. I ran a return line from the house and put 1" pex inside a 1 1/2" metal conduit to radiate heat. The pipe is attached to the bottom side of a 2x4 laid flat. The chickens love it. It is 12' long and when it was 4F a few nights ago it was 38F 2 feet above their roost. Sure it will cost me some more firewood but they are comfy. What's awesome about the heat is with my back up generator it can run as long as I have gas.

The heat tape I have looked at recommends wrapping with insulation. I would think fires would only be an issue if tape is doubled back over itself.....
