Heated waterer for Canada (and my daily -20 celcius)

Good, thanks for the reply. I put it on a thick butcher block (more wood) but it sure worked. Water still cold but not froze. Now, how do you keep the eggs from freezing? I will gather morning and night now. Are the eggs ruined if they freeze? This is my first year at chickens so learning as I go. Thanks again!

As far as I know, eggs are only wrecked if they freeze so hard they crack. Gathering morning and night should work except, maybe, for the very coldest days.

I made one of these for under 10 dollars with a cookie tin, lamp fixture, and a 40 watt bulb. Works great. PM me if you want mre details. It is very esy to make. Where in canada are you??

Thanks, I've seen the cookie-tin waterer post, put i wanted a prefab product with a thermostat in it so it only comes on when needed and just so that i was sure it would be safe indoor or outdoor. no hassel

it has been a surprisingly warm winter so far....but in the past days the water is freezing so I have just changed their water often, since I haven't yet bought the heated dog bowl or base...I'm still waiting on my husband to install a safe outdoor plug outside our house so I can run an outdoor extension cord to the coop.

I had one frozen egg yesterday, but not cracked, so I'll try it for lunch and see if it's good. I saw an article in backyard poulty about putting a seed mat in the nest boxes to keep the eggs from freezing, I wonder if that would create alot of heat in the coop too? I don't want my hens to get too used to the heat and then get sick when they go outside! I was also thinking if I was gonna use a seed mat under their nest boxes (milkcrates) that I might as well use the long seed mat under the waterer as well, instead of getting a dogbowl...it doesnt have a thermostat controll but since I would be using the electricity for the matt anyways, might as well put it under the water!

I used the heated water dish and it worked well but need to be cleaned every few hours cause they would poop in it... I now use my regular plastic waterer and I have a heating pad that you would use on your back or knee, bungee corded around it... works great and i have a 5gal waterer

the problem I have with this is that it is not for outdoor use! I would like something that is ok indoor and outdoor...cause my coop is small so the best would be for me to put the waterer outside in the run, that way the chikies don't throw shavings in their water either, so I don't have to change it everyday! ahh I know I'm so picky, but if I'm gonna pay, I want what's best for me. The heated dog bowls are ok outdoor, right? or the metal base?

This is the one I found as well. I LOVE it - so far. Although it hasn't gotten cold here yet this year!!! Still using the metal base in the hen-house for their water.
