Heated Waterer?

We are using a heated dog bowl as well. We have a mix of large and small chickens (silkies) in our coop. We placed the waterer on a small wooden platform ( it's not very high off the ground, but high enough for no shavings to get in) my DH made for our other waterer. So far the water has stayed clean, and it works very well. The silkies haven't had any issues drinking from the bowl, and no more chipping ice every hour

We got our bowl at TSC, and I had bought the last one they had left. The guy who helped me track one down in the store said they sold out rather fast this week because the temps dropped so suddenly. So, if you don't see anything in the store, ask a worker. He did say they ordered more, and wouldn't take long for them to come in.

My heated dog bowl is elevated on bricks topped by a 12x12" piece of slate. I use deep bedding, and just add another layer of bricks when ever I add new bedding. The water does'nt get any dirtier with the bowl compared to a fountain-type waterer, but there is a big difference in convinience. I just go out to the coop with one small empty bucket for the dirty water, and one bucket with clean water for rinsing and refilling.

GM! Is there any fire hazzard to worry about using the heated dog bowl?

Mine's never come unplugged. I have the plug up hanging on the fence, out of any water that might pool, since I have an open coop. (Eventually it will have it's own gfi outlet)

As far as I know they put out minimal heat, controlled by a thermostat to keep the water just above freezing. They also don't come on at all unless it's below 40*F I think it said - to save energy.
Mine is on a pallet, which has spaces between the slats so I seriously doubt it would overheat.​
