Heater(s) . . . I am going from topic to topic looking for one answer about heaters

I've brooded in the shed with an incandescent bulb as a heat source when daytime temps were high 80's to low 90's. A couple would be under the light, a couple off on the cool side, most would be around the ring of the light. The most important thing is that they have a choice between a warm and cool area.

Can you run an extension cord to your coop?

I love brooding outdoors because I don't have to deal with dust, mess, or smell.

Last summer I used different watt reptile night bulbs to provide the "warm enough" spot. This year I have a brooder plate.

Given plenty of space to move around they'll choose their own heat according to their feathers and the ambient temperatures.

If you put some plastic sheeting or a tarp down you will mitigate some of the mess. I brooded in the laundry room once and had a hell of a time wiping down the walls after. The floor was linoleum so that was good. You can buy a heater and see how the chicks act the first couple days-if they are huddled together they're cold, etc and then return it if they don't need it
I'd probably keep it for future hatching jobs. :D
