Heating pad for chicks

Glad you got a chance to test it out.
When are the class chicks due to hatch?

I plan on setting them either Monday or Tuesday. They have to inspect my incubator first *rolls eyes* so it depends on when the guy shows.. if he shows later than that it will be after Easter before I set. I don't want them at school unattended for a long period of time.. so hopefully the week before Easter..

I have one of those K&H Heating Pads and it works fine, even with an environment on the chillier side. I used it for a single chick when I didn't want to use the light - like when I was at work. I'd put a scrap of fleece on the heating pad so the chick would have something to snuggle down into. The weight of the fleece was enough to keep the heating pad going all day so the fleece would be warm all day, too.

I tried a brooder plate, but the chick was too tall for it and preferred roosting on it. I bet it works great for newly hatched chicks. It sounds like you got it sorted out, though.

I use a regular heating pad without the auto shut off ,,, Sunbeam 732-500 ... Blooie has a great thread pertaining to the MHP ... I tried it and that's the way to go

I question/ answer on the sunbeam site for this model is pretty frustrating. They answer the automatic shutoff question from different people with both “yes” & “no”. .

I also see them telling people not to use an extension cord or it may get an error and shut off. I want to put this in my coop & will need to run an extension cord. Has anyone had experience with this specific aspect?

It's tricky, look at the pics of the controller.

That might be a CYA.
I've used mine running off 3 extensions cords, from house to power strip in coop to pad.

I've used an extension cord on the one I have (Sunbeam 732 - 500), never had issues
