Heating the coop with out electricity...

Chickens will chew cardboard or any insulation you can think of; it must be covered with plywood or something, or don't bother. If your coop isn't shaded, insulating the ceiling will keep it cooler in warm weather, which is much more important. Out of the wind and dry is what's important, and unfrozen water. It's in the teens here, and my birds are outside exploring. Mary
People always say this, but at least my chickens do not bother cardboard. Plastic, cardboard, and tarps are all left alone by them, and they can definitely reach it on the inside of the coop. I do not think I would tempt fate, though.

I live in Ohio and last year we had a brutal winter. I had not yet built my new coop so my birds were in a small, uninsulated temporary coop. My husband and I just made sure all drafts were blocked ( bales of straw, plastic wrap etc..) it was absolutely frigid for weeks. All of our birds did great.
