I've got to admit my experience with ducks is pretty limited, but I like my rouens a lot! They're characters.

I don't have the deep-keeled exhibition type, just a barnyard version that looks just like a giant mallard. They're nice looking birds and pleasant to deal with! I also have a swedish who I adore, but apparently you know about those.

I've heard great things about appleyards and welsh harlequins, though, and I think those breeds are very pretty.

Aylesbury if you dont mind a plain white duck and Rouens or Appleyards if you want some colour, would be my sugestions. I have owned birds of all three types, and loved them all.

Saxonies are on my wish list. They seem similar to the Silver Appleyards. I love the gray head color on the drakes! I am hoping to find some hatching eggs this spring.

Really I think you can go with any duck that isn't a call or maybe a runner. Basically all mallard derived domestic ducks have the same personality and are around the same size. Which is why everyone likes at least one type of them and there aren't that many to choose from. Just go with the color you like.

I am hatching some Cayugas for a neighbor and they are a pretty good sized duck.
