HEAVY RAIN = MITES...... TREATMENT ADVICE/COMMENTARY???

I am here for more advice!! I have noticed them in years pastbyt never like this year! We too have a Jenny wren in a little bird house on the side of the coop. I think she is gone now. Mites on the eggs, mites all in the next boxes, the girl's are def annoyed and biting, scratching. I dumped DE everywhere with no help.....I also made my kid sleep in a shower cap of it when she had lice and it did not work so I am also convinced DE is not a miracle worker. Anyway.....these little assholes jump on us when we are feeding and collecting eggs so I want to get this under control before I spend the day in a hazmat suit cleaning out everything. I was sitting on the couch and had 2 crawling on me which means they came in with my husband. I sprayed my couch with Cedarcide but honestly, I am leery of that now since i sprayed one 3 times on my thumb until it looked dead. I also recently bought a vintage wool rug that had moth damage so I sprayed and cleaned and when I took it to the rug restorerer a damn live moth flew out when I unrolled it! We also have an infestation of an invasive bug that was imported from Asia and have in quarantine zone for a few years but they are now everywhere. I saw 2 this morning so if spraying for mites inadvertently kills some that is good too. Anyway....thanks for the tips and going to try to pick up some Premythin today and douse the place. If I can get a good number killed then I will tackle the cleaning out this weekend. So damn gross!!!! My husband thinks the ones that got in the house will die in 3 days but if they can suck blood from a human or cat they probably will!

Look for these: You mix a small amount of one of these with water and spray every where.

When spraying Permethrin 10, I'm told the mix is 10ml/half gallon of water, mist spray at night when dark (that's when they are out more), even spray the under side of the birds as they roost & above them. Get cracks & ceiling.

I miss calculated the first time (15ml/gallon), sprayed the afternoon (after purchase) I discovered. I also dust my girls (4) rotating with DE & Poultry Dust, had just done them & found nothing on them. I ferment my feed, do scatter dry on the ground when I close them up and my feed bin is bug free.

Since last Thur (Aug 10), I've sprayed Permethrin (gallon) Aug 10 & 12, also sprayed some Neem Oil, dusted with more DE & Poultry Dust in the enclosure. On the 13th I also picked up some Sevin (some are against it, saying it stays in the birds system lifetime as does Adams Spray, some are all for it) dusted the girls on my lap, had a rain suit on & didn't find any on them nor on the rain suit. I was then told I need to spray Permethrin at night when it's dark, later the better. I did that on Aug 13/Sun night, it is alot easier since the girls are roosting & stay still.

Monday, nothing found on my boots when I entered the enclosure. Tuesday again I find none on my boots when I'm in there. In the afternoon decided to feed the girls their salad in the plastic bowl, when I went to close them up, flipped the bowl over is when I found those critters ONLY in the corners all clumped up. Should have taken a picture but I grabbed the can of RAID! Today I'm going to put that dish down again, see if I can collect more, I'm thinking they maybe feed mites? Oh, that's them floating in Raid :)

For severe infestations you can use as much as 38 ml to 198 ml per gallon on/in coops, nesting boxes, etc. (see below):

It was worse than I thought in there!!! I found one of our girls dead. They were all over her and the water dish. I mixed up a spray bottle and when they got on me sprayed my hands! It did kill fast. So I still have to clean the bedding out of there. We have a tractor and I might put them in there for now until we really get this coop cleaned and dead. Do you think that is a good idea? It's not like it's cold. We only have 5 and they are out in the yard when we are home anyway. I figure it might be good to keep them out of there for now.

So sorry! Mites are nasty little creatures! Strip their coop and treat it using the max dose if you're comfortable doing that.

I am waiting for husband to get home cause I can't catch the girls alone.i tried to mist them but it is not getting near their skin. I am hoping that I can get them before they try to move. I swear it looked like a swarm. They were all over the food and water plus when I opened the nest box they were everywhere. I wonder if this year is the first in 6 that we have had this issue because of the weather? That wren nests there every summer.

Make sure you treat the coop good too.
