Height of Food and Water in Run

It was sort of a revelation for me, too.

You know it was for me too! I try to do all that I can for these girls to live their best little chicken lives. Sometimes I make myself stop and think and say "they are chickens and they would not have it like this if they were just out free-ranging around, finding their own food, and finding their own shelter." It's hard to remember sometimes that they do have their own animal instincts and will do what is best for themselves. I mean they put themselves to bed every night in the coop at around the same exact time every day for goodness sakes. They are smarter than we give them credit for sometimes. We seem to make things so much harder for ourselves than necessary.

I was refilling waterers yesterday and, because it has been desperately dry and quite hot, I dumped the old water into the run with the intent of them having a moist place to dig into.

They ignored the fresh, cool water in the waterers and drank from the puddle that formed in the run.
