I’ve been reading this forum for years and am excited to finally have joined! The simplest way to share a bit about myself seems to be to answer the template introduction questions.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We got our first chickens 11 years ago. My husband wanted them for years but when he brought it up, I shut down the conversation. We had little kids and while I love all animals I didn’t want to commit to chickens. Looking back this sounds harsh but at the time I thought they were dirty and stupid. I really knew nothing about chickens.

One day an old chicken coop appeared in the back yard. The next year chain link fencing went up, and soon after my husband and 5 year old came home with a crate containing 6 adult chickens. We got them into their run and the love affair began. Who knew they had such a variety of sounds and body language to communicate. Fascinating!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 20 adult chickens and are expecting 7 chicks this week.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have Buff Orpingtons, Blue black splash Ameraucana, Easter Eggers, Ancona, Double laced Barnevelder, Blue laced red
Wyandotte, Columbian Wyandotte

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love observing how the chickens interact together and seeing their different personality traits emerge, their joy when they free range or receive treats, and how it feels to snuggle the ones who are up for a cuddle.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We are building a new chicken coop. We have no prior experience but I love the process and hope to pursue other building projects.
I also love to read.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I’m married, have worked has an RN, have 2 teenage sons, and 2 rabbits.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC many years ago by doing a google search when a beloved hen had ascites. It was heartbreaking and the thread helped soothe the pain by providing answers. My hen was a 2 year old buff orpington who had egg yolk peritonitis.

I finally joined because this forum is a font of knowledge and it would be nice to pick the brains of like minded people.
