In the Brooder
Long time forum creeper, just finally made an account.
I'm from Western Australia. Right now I'm keeping Coturnix because we aren't allowed to have chickens in my area.
At my old house I had a flock of 20 made up of Ancona, araucanas, hiline rescues, old english game, Pekins and the crossbreeds they produced (araucana x pekin are amazing).
Since moving I tried to sneak 2 australorp girls in but one turned out to be a rooster and with the neighbors so close (its a "cottage" block) I couldn't get away with it.
I am loving the coturnix though. Theyre an excellent 2nd choice and they may be overtaking my love for chickens.
It took me a while to adjust to the idea of eating a small bird's eggs but I love them now. My partner refuses to eat them claiming they taste funny
daughter loves them though!
At the moment I have my original flock which is 1 male and 5 females, I recently bought 4 more to get more colour range but I am not happy with those birds and have kept them separately just in case. I suspect they are either a mix of males or older birds. I was told they are the same age as my current flock who produce well and look lovely and healthy - these new birds are not laying nor do they look the same age as mine.
I also have a small batch of chicks in the brooder at the moment, supplying endless cuteness and stress from my sleepless nights fretting over if they have enough water or food (or "is the water leaking again")
Anyway hello, lovely to be here, thanks for the lovely site to read. I look forward to posting more.
