Hello everyone, my name is Ruth. I live in sunny Queensland Australia. I've been a chicken enthusiast ever since I got my first chicken when I was 6 years old. I've been caring for chickens for 15 years now, and I'm currently looking into writing a new book on how novice backyard chicken owners can diagnose and treat their sick and injured chooks. I'm inspired to do this because we have very limited medical care for chickens over here in Australia. We only have a handful of avian specialists and they're few and far between.

I had a very unique experience with our chickens when I was growing up. After a suspected break-in, all of our chooks since then slept in our laundry-in the house! Our house ended up becoming their house too, and they were a part of the family. I look forward to being on this site asking and answering all of your chookie questions.

Til then,
See ya later mate!

You have a rather fearful avatar. I've heard that many critters, snakes and bugs are poisonous in Australia. Your avatar looks like a carnivore to me. Otherwise G'day and Welcome to Backyard chickens. BYC has a thread "Australia, six states and one funny little island." I like to point that out because when folks ask about medications etc., the names are different in Australia and the US, or a product may not be available in another country.
Lucky you, headed toward summer while we are racing towards winter

Welcome to backyard chickens! Glad to have you around, mate! And good luck on your book project, you sure are going to find lots of inspiration and help over here. It's actually a much needed book!

Well sure is lucky! I honestly love winter  and while summer is fading and autumn is on the door, I'm going to australia next month! To be welcomed by the hot rainy summer of Sydney! Oh i hope it's not as wet as they say! I love winter...

Hi Ruth, welcome to BYC!

Your experience with raising chickens and how to treat their various illnesses/injuries will be a welcome addition.

Thank you for joining us and good luck with your book!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes! I look forward to starting my book soon; I know it needs to be out there for all chicken enthusiasts alike. And a bit about my avatar; I found the little picture online after I was looking into the latest genetic work into Dinosaurs. Apparently, a scientist managed to isolate the building-blocks of DNA from a 66 million year old Tyrannosaurus Rex thigh bone.

Not only were they able to run a DNA marker matching scan on the material, but they were also able to compare it to modern day animals; and the closest living match was the Chicken!! So there you have it, the mighty T. Rex lives on in our humble Chookies.
