I have been searching around for some answers on the Internet recently about 4 chickens I rescued and everytime it led me to this site so I decided to join! I have barred rock hens that are amazingly wonderful egg layers never had any problems. The 4 chickens I rescued were by a farm left outside in the freezing cold with dead chickens laying around them like somebody just ran them over so I took the 4 that were alive in hopes of saving them. I took them home and brought them inside right away and noticed some of there toes were turning black (frostbite) since then I've been doing Epsom salt soaks and got vitamin and electrolyte tablets for there water and wrapped there feet. 1 actually didn't survive but the other 3 the black parts fell off and seem to be healing well. My question is I'm not sure what breed they are so I was hoping you guys might be able to help me with that and the one started slobbering after she drinks so I wasn't sure is that normal if she drinks a lot at once? and there poop is extremely runny could that be normal? Thanks so much for any help or advice you guys can give me!!!

Please post in fullest detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread - the folks there are very good with advice and suggestions. Rescued chickens that were obviously neglected - may not have been eating proper food, may have worms, or lice and mites, or even disease. Maybe being fed a decent chicken feed, their poo will improve. If there is any sign of blood, that is another problem to discuss.

Good on you for rescuing those poor birds! Goodness, it makes my blood boil when I hear things like how your found these. As the above posters suggested, please do post in the Emergencies section and also check out the Learning Center for articles on rescuing chickens, getting and keeping them healthy, pests etc. It sounds like they are in good hands with you! Good luck with them.
