Hey guys and gals. My girlfriend and I are cleaning out an old coop and are going to be updating it and starting our own flock. We live about an hour northeast of Dallas and have a pretty good idea which breeds we want in our flock, but would appreciate any suggestions you have regarding good breeds for good laying birds for our area. We aren't going to be eating the birds as much as our eggs.

Thanks for any info and/or help that any of you can provide. We are really excited about our new hobby and cant wait to get started.

I have the Buff Orpington and 2 Plymouth Rocks. They're great egg layers, and super freindly. I can pick them up and pet them and they follow me around especially when they think I have a snack. And if Im not sharing my snack, Molly will attempt to steal it. She snatched a whole bagel out of my hand one day. They've never gone broody on me. I have a silkie that does tho every couple of weeks like clockwork.
Its definitely a lot of fun, especially if you raise them from baby chicks.

Hi and :welcome

You should think about getting sex links, they are really great layers, they barely miss a day, and do well in the heat as well (we live in Australia).

I hope you find all the info you need here. :D
