Newbie alert! (So I’m going to use the posted template.)
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Extremely new…like about 3 weeks now. But have been considering them for months with a 2 month old coop kit to be built Sitting in the garage.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I wanted/needed only 3-4 but have 6 chicks, because that was the minimum at the store. They are around 3 weeks old and even though my daughter got me a book on raising them, one “sand bathing“ in the pine shaving brought me online to see if I needed to act on this. I knew what it was but didnt know if I should add dirt or not. Hence the answer and so much more was found on this forum.
(3) What breeds do you have?
ISA Browns. I hooked up with a sisters friend and she had these and others. These fit the bill so it was a waiting game until they were available.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Honestly we were initially looking at layers and eggs and didn’t dwell on many specifics. I found, through that friend, just how friendly and social they were. Our chicks are already running up to me when I check on them throughout the day. I personally enjoy being around nature and animals and it’s fun learning new things.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy writing, art and crafting. We just bought a house over a year ago in Tennessee after living all over Florida for the past 30 years and are currently landscaping and updating the house.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have been together for almost 25 years. We met while active duty in the military and have both since retired. We got our first sheltie in 2006 and have adopted 3 since. Had trained and planned to compete in agility but a sprained ankle two weeks before the first trial and a house selling not long after changed those plans. We had horses for years, training and endurance riding. All were eventually given to good homes and the horse trailer was traded for a toy hauler and my husband got me into motorcycles. We have sold those upon leaving Florida and now looking for another.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this awesome site with a question online that took me to your forum…about an hour ago. So I’ve known about you all for an hour. And joining was easy when you have a lot of friendly knowledgeable people in the area.
