Hello all. Picking up chicks in one week!

Welcome to BYC!

I'm glad you joined our community.

You'll be getting some nice breeds! The Golden Comets and Black Sex-Links should be particularly great layers, while the Buff Orpingtons have a well-deserved reputation for being wonderful docile pets. I've really enjoyed my Americana, too. She's been a good layer of lovely green eggs and quite gentle as well.

If you want to chat with neighbors, I suggest taking a look at the Massachusetts thread:BYC members in Massachusetts?

Hi Jak, nice to meet you. In the big cities(like Chicago) hawks have even swooped down to grab a fluffy little dog on leash. Of course the raptors living around the city are very comfortable around people now.

This is what I hear.
I was hoping that since I'll be literally standing outside with them while gardening in our .5 acre yard, that a hawk wouldn't come for them.
Is this a totally naive way of thinking?
I'm only getting five chickens and would like to keep five chickens!
You'd better get 10. Speaking from experience.

These guys will have a covered 8x14 run so they will be protected. But, once the weather is nicer we will let them free range in the backyard, so hawks could be an issue.

I have heard that even though they are sold as Americaunas, they are more likely Easter Eggers.....

That is true. I bought some last year at our feed store marked as Araucana. I later educated myself on this breed & figured out I have Easter Eggers. I am super happy with them though, 3 hens give me a green egg and one gives me a white egg. They have a good temperament as well.

Welcome to BYC, Jak. Glad you decided to our flock. Black Sex Links are my favorite chickens; hardy and friendly egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they, along with my Red Sex Links (Golden Comets) have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. I've especially been impressed with the laying persistence of my Black Sex Links in cold winter temperatures. You should get loads of eggs from those sex links. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks.

Thanks all. We are going to a "Backyard Chicken Basics" class tonight. Probably the same information we have read about in our books, but it seemed like the timing was right.

So, we have decided to hold off for a month or so. We will look get them at the end of March. Still lots of snow on the ground and I don't want these guys to be 4 weeks old and find that i still cant build the coop. Being responsible is no fun......
