Good info, thanks so much!View attachment 1575459 Glad you could join us, maybe get your father too as well! The 4 sq ft per bird in coop and 10 sq ft per bird if attaching covered run is a good rule of thumb larger if plan to expand. Just make sure opening to pop door is big enough for bird. I use at least a 12 x 12 inch pop door. Just make sure door is large enough for Brahma as they get a bit bigger. My largest hen will be 7 lbs and it works well.
Ooooh, NellyBird -- You asked a great question about books. As a former newspaper editor and book reviewer for a weekly farm publication, I LOVE books and, of course, poultry! (Now that I've said I was an editor, please note that I will doubtless make errors in grammar or punctuation. Hey, I'm a FORMER editor and I'm not on the clock anymore or locked into Associated Press style!)
My favorite book is usually the newest one I've picked up -- because I still believe in buying at a store where I can actually read off a paper page. Before I had chickens of my own, I acquired Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow, whose Hatching and Brooding Your Own Chicks was useful both when my Iowa Blue was hatching her eggs and when I've bought chicks from the local farm store.
Having spent years looking at words alone, I like books with photos and small "factoids" or interesting tidbits. The Storey's books have plenty of information but don't have enough visuals to keep me interested -- with the exception of its Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds, which is a buffet for the eyes. I like any book by Jenna Woginrich, including Chick Days. Pam Freeman's Backyard Chickens Beyond the Basics is a fun, easy read.
Even the best authors seem to have disagreements about some of the specifics. Kathy Shea Mormino's Guide to Backyard Chickens has lots of good info, but if memory serves me correctly, she does not believe in putting apple cider vinegar in chickens' drinking water, a tactic many owners swear by.
My advice is to read everything you can -- and that includes BYC posts! Welcome to the group!!
Ha! Thanks!! So glad to be here!Hello!Welcome to our FUN-omenal Flock!
