Hatching
Hello!
I am thrilled to have found this community! As a kid, my family kept chickens, goats, various dogs and cats, and even the occasional rabbit. (We lived in the country, so space was never an issue...except for that darn pony I never could convince my parents I just HAD to have)
Now, the closer to 30 I get, the more I miss those days of country living. Although I now live in a suburban-esque neighborhood, my backyard is a decent size for raising a small flock for eggs and pets.
Though I always adored our chickens (particularly a hen I dubbed "Pigeon" who was my pal for several summers), my current plans and proximity to neighbors has me leaning toward ducks. Sustainability is the name of the game, and I like the idea of being able to naturally hatch out babies when the time comes to retire layers. Unfortunately, my city doesn't allow roosters.
I especially like what I've read about Welsh Harlequin ducks, though I'm not quite at the purchasing ducklings stage yet.
This site has already provided a wealth of information, and I can't wait to learn everything I can about raising my first mini-flock of ducklings.
(I hope this wasn't too long! I'm just excited to have found people who "get it", as my entire family gapes at me, baffled and confused, when I tell them I plan on raising ducks in my backyard)
