In the Brooder
My name Jason, I am in my 2nd week of raising my first ever flock ! I currently have 10 3 week old chicks. 3 Rhode Island Reds,3 Speckled Sussex and 4 Black Austalorps and these girls are growing up fast. They never cease to amaze me or put a smile on my face. I am also the proud owner of a 1 yr old male Minpin who won't stop watching his "little sisters", he seems to be just as amazed as I am. They all seem to be very happy and healthy in spite of having a couple of issues early on with 2 of the Reds. On day 1 one of the Reds had a bunch of droppings stuck to her rear end and couldn't use the bathroom, she must have been like that when we adopted her but didn't notice until she was back home in the brooder. That was a learning experience ! She is good to go now though. Early last week I came home from work, my girlfriend was chick sitting, and another one of the Reds was panting heavily, had droopy looking eyes and wings spread out limply to her sides. Very scary ! She wouldn't eat or drink so I mixed up some chicken-ade per instructions on the little packet and stayed up all night with her dripping the mixture into her beak with a cotton swab. She is currently one of the largest out of the flock and most friendly. They are truly amazing and my only regret so far is that I wish I would have started raising chickens a long time ago !
