I am new to raised chickens. I started about a month ago with 2 hens...or I think they are hens. One I know is for sure because she laid her first egg last Sunday. She is a golden comet and her name is Shirley. The other one is named Laverne and I am not sure what she/he is...she is black and I think she resembles a Black Java because she has the green sheen to her black feathers. She also some red mixed in. Her legs are yellow though so I am not sure if Java is correct. "She" mounts Shirley all the time. She does not crow and she does not have spurs...yet. Shirley has established herself as top chick so is Laverne maybe challenging the pecking order?? I tried to post a pic of Laverne but I dont see it. I will keep trying to post it so you all can see Laverne and maybe tell me if you believe she is a hen/rooster and what kind she/he may be.

Congrats on your first egg! It does sound like you possibly have a rooster, but females do mount other females to show their dominance. Once you reach 10 posts, you can post a photo of the chicken in question and ask others opinion if or not you have a rooster. Good luck.
