I am a new member here-I live in the country, but in a subdivision. I have 3 black copper marans and 1 blue copper maran. They are very SWEET, and I predict they will be laying eggs in a week or so. I hand-raised all but one since they were a week old (Feb). The people I bought from did not at all know how to sex these chickens, because I ended up with two roosters, Initially I knew I had one rooster because of the way he acted and was bigger, and had begun crowing! I returned him and traded off for a beautiful solid black maran lady. But NOW the "big" hen was a rooster ( which I had always known but didn't want to believe!!), and started crowing about a week after I got rid of his brother. I contacted the breeder the second time, asking him to meet him half-way to trade again, but he refused. It has been an ordeal, to say the least.I had to travel a 90 mile trip to get a hen last time, which was wrong anyway, but had to do something.
The rooster will not let the new girl eat anything so she has to wait to eat, the other two girls take on his behavior, too. The neat thing is she is very smart!
Anyways I also want to know if there is anyone near north Georgia who would like to trade with me, i really want a fourth hen to compkete my plan for eggs for our fam. Thanks.
