Hello, My name is Cal, I'm new to this forum and new to raising chickens(we always raised them as a kid but this is the first time I've worked with them since). I've started off small with a 4'X6' coop on a 16'X24' run and what was supposed to be 11 pullets. I have one each of the following; Rhode Island Red, Black Star, Red Star, White Leghorn, Exchequer Leghorn, Dominique, Black Copper Marans, Barred Rock, Barnevelder, and 2 Ameraucanas(We have 2 childen with a third a couple weeks out so yes, all of my chickens are named). My RIR turned out to be a rooster.

My main purpose is primarily to have something enjoyable to occupy my free time but also to have home grown eggs. I like the idea of having all different egg colors in my basket and would love to add some Olive Eggers to my flock. My girls aren't laying yet but I expect they should start within a few weeks.

I've enjoyed reading through this forum and I have gotten a lot of good information helping me set up a good facility for my birds, I look forward to the good conversations to come.

Hiya Cal! That's a cool looking little coop you have in your picture! You certainly will find they will occupy your free time. There's nothing like sitting and watching the chickens antics. Of course, ducks are cuter and smarter. Would love to see a picture of your flock. Sounds like you have quite the variety!

Do you plan to keep all the breeds you have assembled? Rule of thumb is 4 sq.feet per bird in the coop, and 10 sg.feet per bird in the outdoor run. In other words, your coop is just large enough for 6 chickens. If you crowd birds, tempers flare and you get feather picking, fights and even cannibalism.

You could get another coop or double the space with an addition.

My run is well protected from preditors and my birds are never closed up into the coop, they come and go as they please. The coop is only for nesting, roosting and protection from the elements. I don't expect overcrowding to be an issue. I'll take that into consideration though, Thanks.
