I've had both breeds before and they are both cold hardy, dependable breeds. The RIRs will lay a little better, and the Barred Rocks will give you a little more meat. Also the BRs have a more docile temperament as RIRs can sometimes be quite aggressive. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
