I am in NJ and will be raising my third batch of chickens. Because of ordering requirements I split my order with a friend, each of us getting 12 chicks. As we divided them, we kept "likes" together as my experience is birds of a feather flock together. My question is HOW DO THEY KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE??? Seriously. One of my chicks wasnt doing well and needed some tlc. When I put it back in the pen, the other two of the same breed came running up to it. We had bare neck chickens that hung out with the Guinea Hens, proof to me they perfer those that look like themselves or at least close.
Enjoy your hens, keep the fox and raccoons away!

that is a very interesting theory, I don't have more than one of the same breed of chicken so I've not experienced that

Hello and welcome from Ohio...so glad you joined BYC

I have noticed the same thing in my little flock of bantam cochins. The like colors are always together.

Will be interesting to see if others have noticed the same thing :)

Hi! I'd noticed something like what you described. We had 3 silver speckled hamburgs and 3 black and white silkie things, hatched under the same surrogate at the same time. The silkie things 'hang' together and the hamburgs did too until we sold two of them (the third was said to have had a cold so we kept her should have kept the others too) now the remaining hamburg stays with the silkies. not sure if its colour or the bond they formed whilst under their 'mum'

Hi I have two each of Wheaton Marans, blue Australorps and black cross breeds. All the likes hang together but I put it down to behaviour. The Marans in particular behave unlike the others. They do little displays of strength rather than pecking behaviour to establish order. Great dance moves.
