Hello and newbie Questions

yeah I have bought that particular finish by the semi truck load in 5 gallon cans.

lay one of those doors out in the weather and tell me how long it lasts

We used to buy a product called fabulon which was far better than helmsman
but its not good enough for weather either.

and thers a line of professional grade called Dura-Seal its the parent company of Minwax

and again I have literally tried them all ( all the good ones, I didn't try "freds" polyurethane)

We wanted a poly that could be used on semi covered porches and decks, never found one

We had to use a silicone based protectant that soaked in rather than producing a film.

I'm just trying to save some folks money and trouble,

Moisture cured urethane might last a little longer but nothing is going to last like we would want it to.

except maybe a properly bonded rubberized coating.

My .02 cents

Yeah there is no great exterior clear in that category of finishes. A south facing door will start to peel after about 2 years, less exposure and you can get 3 sometimes as much 5 years.

The eurathane they use for bed liners doesn't come in clear but it's incredibly durable. It's also $80-100 a gallon.

Now that stuff would probably work pretty well, bed liner.

I used to use a waterborne poly on some high end jobs that was 120 bucks a gallon and had a lower coverage rate than oil modified.

its film strength was incredible, but its still rigid and unsuitable for this application.

Hmm maybe I just skip the polyurethane all together then if it will cause that much trouble.

What about painting with exterior paint, or with Rustoleum metal paint?

Or is it better to just leave the cage wire as is? BTW it's 16 gauge galvanized wire, 1/2 x 1 grid.

My cage will be sitting under a tree and has it's own roof (shade) so will never be exposed to the sun.

Thanks for all your help. It'll save me a lot of headache later on.

OK cool. Save me a lot of time too. Thanks.

Glad to be of any help, if its any consolation I have some galvanized fence wire on my property thats been out there for going on 80 years

not covered in poop mind you but 80 years....And this is Georgia, things rust here.
