Hello and thank you

Hello I came across this forum a few days ago and figured id join. I had an absolutely catastrophic hatch and information I found here was vital in helping me save 4 (1s still touch and go though so might only be 3) of the 6 ducklings that attempted to hatch. Its a long story so ill do a separate post elsewhere. hopefully it might help someone else in the future.

My husband and I (along with our two kids aged under 4 and our two (mostly retired hunting) dogs aged over 10) have 2/3 of an acre. on that land we grow all our own fruit and veg. I've had quail and chickens in the past but settled on ducks as I like them best and they suit our home set up best. We've also previously bred meat rabbits and might do so again in the future.

I have 2 khaki Campbell ducks and 4 Cayuga ducklings (now). I recently lost 4 silver apple yards to a fox. Our duck's live in our orchard and keep the grass trim under the trees. They're also great for pest control during the fruiting season. I like the eggs too. My 4 year old really wants to get some chickens but we'll wait until she's old enough to look after them (as I'm busy enough). We'll probably get bantums of some sort.

While I am mostly a stay at home mother I do still work part time on special projects within the security industry. life is all around very busy but satisfying.
Welcome to BYC!

It's Murphys law when incubating duck eggs that as soon as it comes time to hatch all moisture will vanish from the air over night and leave you high and (litteraly) dry.
Yep. We've had +30 degrees (Celsius) and no rain for two weeks. The second the lids off the incubator it's bone dry.

Update: Baby number 4 is doing great. Eating drinking and pooping a ton.

The naval has receded and is nice and fluffy. I has lots of crusty gunk stuff in the down over one wing (which is free moving so I just looks gross) and is much smaller than the rest but that's it. Baby 4 has been added to the brooder this morning and seems very happy.
