Hello everyone. I am new to BYC. I have visited the site several times looking for information on my new chicken adventure. We put up a coop this summer and have nine young hens - six Buff Orpingtons, two Golden Laced Wyndottes and a Barred Rock, no roosters. We are just beginning to get eggs so the eggs are still pretty small but they are laying several eggs a day. I'd like to add a couple Rhode Island Reds next year and perhaps at some point we may consider getting a turkey or two. Anyone here from the Arlington area?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a good mixed flock. I love Buff Orpingtons and some of them in my flock. They are beautiful, hardy, friendly and gentle, and good layers of large, brown eggs. No roosters is a good idea. I currently have 25 hens and no roosters and I get loads of eggs without all of the aggression, fights, crowing in the middle of the night, over-breeding, and battering of the hens that goes along with having rooster, and I think that my hens enjoy the stress free life that they have. We have a number of members from the Arlington, WA area and you can get in touch with them at https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=arlington,+washington. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you Michael. I guess it is fair to say birds of a chicken feather, flock together.
