Hello Backyard Chicken Folks

Hello All. I am new to keeping chickens. I had eight hens, two varieties, until a very big hawk ate one yesterday. We're all still quite sad about it. I joined BYC to ask questions about my flock and get advice about all the usual stuff: predators, pests, feed, and the like. My chickens have a coop but are largely free-range, in the fenced yard, during the day.

Hello, and welcome! Sorry that you lost one to the hawk. Is there a way that you can section an area of the yard off for the free ranging, and then add a covering over it like some bird netting or something?

Either use netting or some other type of overhead cover for the birds to protect them from aerial predators.

Welcome to BYC, so sorry for your loss. Would you be able to have the chickens out in an enclosed run with a solid cover ? It would protect from hawks as well as inclement weather.
