I've been lurking here since March. We got our first batch of chickens in April from Tractor Supply. We lost a few to predators until I figured out just how sneaky raccoons can be. The morning my daughter found one of the Roo's head pulled off I encased the whole coop in hardware cloth, and bought 18 more chicks from Murray McMurray.

The new babies are about 3 weeks old and I've been letting them hang out with the teenagers in a dog kennel while everyone forages. I want to move them into the coop in their own space soon.

My daughter and I live on 62 acres with 4 big chicken loving dogs and a cat that loves to terrorize the birds.

I'm researching building a bigger coop for the new additions, and I'm torn between using a stall in my barn or building something new.

I've added pictures of the teenagers checking out the babies.

This is our flock so far...teenagers are listed first
1 Buff Orpington Roo
2 Black Sex Link Hens
2 California White Hens

The babies:
5 Buff Orpington (girls )
5 Golden Laced Wynadottes (I think one may be a Roo, but the rest look like girls)
5 Barred Rocks(girls )
2 Silver Laced Wynadottes (girls )
1 Mystery Free Chicken (I think it's a Dark Brahma and probably a roo)

Sorry for the coon losses, those things can cause so much harm to a flock.

Between using an existing stall or building from scratch, I'd be inclined to re-habbing the barn stall for a coop (but then I'm kind of lazy & cheap:gig).

Thanks for joining us, it's nice to have you here!
