Hi there, BYC! My name is Kari and I have had chickens for about one year now. We started out with five chicks (mixed breeds) from a friend and unfortunately lost two of them to my dog early on. We've learned to rotate outdoor time so my girls get to free range at least half of the day.
My husband worked hard to transform an old outdoor playhouse into a coop, and built a run around it by himself (he's pretty handy
). We were gifted a young rooster earlier in the year. He did become aggressive, so we got rid of him and were back down to my three hens. We experimented with having my broody girl hatch some eggs with only one surviving. So we went to TSC and bought five more chicks to keep our one company. We picked out one Austrolorp, one Bantam, one Cochin, and an Amber Sex Link, which unfortunately just passed last night I believe from coccidiosis. The chick that was successfully hatched is a mix between an Easter Egger and Black Svart Hona. The chicks are 6 weeks old this Friday and we will be making initial introductions to my girls over the weekend.
I found BYC during my Google searches for general chicken questions. This site has always been the most informative and open; I have seen nothing but genuine care for the chicken community and people helping each other out. I hope to be able to contribute some day!
Besides our chickens, my hubby and I have three children ranging in ages from 11-3, two dogs, and two cats.
