Hello! Excited to announce I am a new chicken dad! My wife, kids and I just moved into a new house that’s got a good size backyard. We’ve always wanted to raise chickens for fun (and eggs) so we decided it’s time. We have 2 kids, a 6 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. Both very excited about our new flock. Though our yard is good size, we decided to start with a smaller flock of 4. We each picked one out. We have 2 Easter eggers, a black sex link and a cinnamon sex link. Right now they’re in a big 40 gallon Rubbermaid tote with a brooder plate for heat, food and water. They seem happy so far. In the mean time, we’re converting a garden shed into their coop and are planning to build a run that measures roughly 15 feet, by 5 feet. They will get some time to free range as well. We also have a little 9 lb dachshund who so far has been great around the chicks. Sniffs them a little and minds her business. She will be the flocks body guard in our back yard chasing off any little ground predators. We also have an aquatic turtle who’s about 13 years old. Looking forward to this journey and learning more about these awesome birds. Any pointers is much appreciated.
