I am relatively new to raising chickens. I received my first flock of 6 about a year ago for the first time in my life. I love them. I live in southern va with my husband ( Bob), dog ( Munchie) guinea pig ( Kudja ) and rescued off a bridge cat ( Kitty/Hudinni). I own a quilt shop in Boydton. I am a quilt pattern designer/teacher and run the shop.
I do have some questions regarding my girls( chickens).

I'm going to start raising chickens for eggs. Totally new to this. I will look over plans for coops. I have space and will need to make sure the girls will be safe from coyote , fox and raccoons for sure. I will be using a shed roof off a mini barn to start off then expand that area for a run. It will be a coop combined of materials of different sorts built with plans I have seen at BYC. I live in southern ohio. I will buy chicks from the local hatchery to start off. When the weather breaks I hope to start the coop process. I am worried about when I can start with chicks due to the weather. I have a lot to learn, but am excited and have wanted to do this for a while. I want the grandkids to learn and experience this journey too. I hope to have some personable hens.
