Were going to raise chickens for the first time . we will get them in a few weeks , we're converting a dog kennel that used a shed as the dog house . there's about a 6' by 12 '
area in side the shed that is penned off and 12' by 10' out side .It has a partition that separates both the in side and the out side into 2 separate areas with separate exits doors . I plain on removing the inside partition . I build the nesting boxes
before visiting BYC and built a 3 tier system incorrectly as the nest are 11' by 11'' by 11''
i built in 12 of them i plan on removing 3 as we are getting 12 chickens 9 should be enough
to start with . I used rough cut lumber it's stand 3' 8" of which 8" are legs and 43 3/4" wide
and 11" deep . I can easily reconfigure the nest to 15" by 15" by 15" . I hope that will be large enough . they I still need to seal up the area so nothing can get in . I'm also going to have a garden that backs up to the shed big enough that I only need to grow in half of it that way I can rotate the garden from one side to the other and let the chickens have use of the other half .

I wouldn't stress about nest boxes too much I have 13 hens and 4 nest boxes. They all lay their eggs in the same one. You won't need one for each hen :)

Welcome to BYC!

15x15 is good for nest boxes. Some people use 1 box for 4 birds. But this wouldn't work in my coop. LOL I need a box for every 2 birds! They all use every box and you will also need one in case one of them goes broody.

If you need any tips and hints on raising your new brood or building the coop, stop by our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry...
