My name Is Dani, I just joined this morning, I have a lot of questions being a new chicken owner so I wanted to join something like this where I can reach other poultry owners with questions I may have. My husband and I started our Poultry adventure, (called Patriotic Poultry) less than a year ago. We stared with 6 chicks, then bought some more, two died before maturity and just recently we have had a thief in the night come and steal 2 fully grown chickens from our enclosed coup. very upsetting, I must now secure a roof for the entire run to keep them safe at night. so! currently, we have 7 full-sized chickens almost ready to start producing eggs and I recently got 6 more chicks to add to the flock later on. the breeds we currently have are road island reds, bantams, Americanas, turkens, silkies, silver-laced wyandottes and gold-laced wyandottes. We also recently added 4 ducks, 7 guineas, and 6 quail to the homestead! We want to try farming so this is our slow introduction.

Hi Dani, sorry about the loss of a couple of your birds. Do you suspect animal or human thefts? Hope you can get things secured against both.

Best wishes!

I believe either a fox or raccoon is climbing over my run wall or a hawk or owl is swooping in at night and snatching them! each time I found one missing I have found chunks/piles of feathers inside their coop as though there had been a fight. and nothing else left of them. there are no signs that something dug underneath the wall so my money is on a flying predator.

Hi Dani and welcome to BYC you have picked a great place to learn so ask away your flock sounds like mine i have 47chickens 8ducks 18turkeys and 147quail and without my knowledge my 10yo daughter ordered 60quail eggs but they are gonna magically appear at my moms house after they hatch was it a critter who took your chickens or a human invader that took them i only ask because i had a homeless human invader that was stealing eggs a few yrs ago that I caught and had to yell at he still comes every Sunday for a dozen eggs and a shower if it was a critter finish your roof but use the hot pepper trick you get the hottest peppers you can get your hands on and crush them especially the seeds put it all the way around your run and coop and it will make a barrier to keep the critters out
