I once had a trio of white silkies. I have a bunch of different colors now, but these have since passed. They were relentless. I do not know how they came clean, but the day after they'd get filthy, they would be pristine white again.Thank you, I'm going to wait to see if I can get a pic of the problem, it seems to be happening every few days. We then take her out of the coop clean her up then put her back. She ends up looking like she has dreadlocks of mud hanging from the top of her head. Just don't get it. It's not wet or muddy in the coop. But my chickens hardly ever go outside the coop to the open fenced area. Maybe once it gets warmer here in MN they will.
No way, that's amazing to hear.I once had a trio of white silkies. I have a bunch of different colors now, but these have since passed. They were relentless. I do not know how they came clean, but the day after they'd get filthy, they would be pristine white again.

Thank you, honestly they look like dread locks made of mud or a combo of mud & chicken crap. I'll send pics as soon as I see it again. Maybe this site will be my good luck charm & it will quit happening, LOLWelcome to BYC, and Congratulations on the new grandbaby!
A couple of things comes to mind.
1. Another chicken maybe pulling feathers from her crest and leaving a mess behind.
2. Its probably not warm enough there for snakes, but if one has tried to get her it could leave a slimy residue.
I would check for holes larger than a quarter in your coop or run and cover them.
