Hello, I have a Buttercup chicken. A survivor from my next door neighbor. I was wondering if anyone raised them and how long they live. I never expected to own a chicken, I have cats, dogs and parrots and finches. I had pets my whole life.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've owned dozens of breeds over the past 50 years, but Buttercups are one breed I've never owned. I would love to see some photos of your Buttercups. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Chickens are flock animals and do much better in the company of a buddy or two or three. A single bird can adapt to being a house chicken but probably would not last long with cats & dogs. There is a very good thread "people with house chickens." that might interest you. Welcome to BYC.

Hello back again. My 2 dogs actually get along with her. She waited a month before coming into their fenced in yard to hang out with them., and pecked them on the nose to show them who's boss. If their drinking from their drip bottle she goes right in and they get out of her way. She's free range but sleeps in a coop at night. My cats are indoor cats I don't trust them with her. She comes into the back hall a lot to have healthy snacks and hang out with the dogs. The dogs and I are her flock I spend a lot of time with her, I'm retired. She flies up to my arm or my back or sits on my lap. She spends a lot of time foraging lately, more than in the summer.

It sounds like your Buttercup has made herself right at home with you and the dogs. Glad it's working out for you!
