Hello Everyone. My name is Candy. I’ve been raising chickens about 3 years now. I have roughly 30 chickens. I originally started with Tractor Supply Smokey Pearls. Then added a few Star links. Then inherited a flock from my neighbor who passed. So I have a back yard full of different breeds and sizes. Not that I so much mind with the price of eggs what they are today. My girls and 3 guys are a blessing and a mess at times. I love some of their personality’s. And a few are just straight up drama queens. Who can be so cute at times in their own way. But one of the things I love most is once again having fresh eggs. Haven’t had those since I was a teen with my grandparents. A fresh egg has a taste that’s indescribable.
Some of my other interest are antiques, gardening, about anything outside, camping, canoeing, fishing, and my other most important enjoyment is taking care of my 4 other fur babies. 2 chi’s (Jax and Luke) and my 2 yorkie’s (Itty Bitty and Remi) well Remi was supposedly a yorkie but not so sure now… But we love her anyway. I’m married to a wonderful man for almost 36 years. Who has let me retire to be an at home puppy and chicken momma. With a 16 yo niece who moved in about a year and a half ago after we lost her father. My younger brother who was a paraplegic.
I ran across this site looking for information on preparing shipped eggs for incubation. This is a first for me. I’ve just received 15 silver laced Wyandotte eggs and 7 ameraucana eggs. I’m hoping for a 100% hatch rate. I know in my dreams but happy with 40 to 50 % hatch rate. This site seems to be loaded with individuals who don’t mind giving advice or sharing their experiences with others. I look forward to reading through more of the forum. Thank you all for reading my rambling…. :)

Hiya, Candy, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Loved your intro, but sorry about your brother. :hugs

I've got eggs due to hatch on the 14th and staggered hatches weekly after that so know the excitement. I usually can get near 100% on my own, but shipped eggs this past year has been closer to 35%, whereas other years was 70%. I just hope your eggs got the better USPS drivers!

For shipped eggs, I unpack them and put them in egg cartons pointy side down for a day/24 hours.

After that, I set them in the incubator, then keep the turner off for 24 hours. Incubator should already have been running at 99.5F, and around 40% humidity. Don't forget to turn the turner back on the next day, but some leave it off for two or three days. I just stick to one.

Wishing you a great hatch!
