I'm v comfy with broodies. The hens at my house are more like pets than livestock, so I've no objection to them taking a break from laying to dream about chicks for a while.I highly recommend Coronation Sussex as long you don't mind them going broody, last year the best one went broody three times, which I love as we wanted chicks. However the Speckled Sussex isn't fully grown yet but she's rather small, I don't know how big she'll end up.
Have you tried http://www.backyardpoultry.com/noticeboard/index.php?cat_id=0 ? I've seen cuckoo marans on there, but it would've been an SA breeder. When we first got them they were going to be livestock, and the cockerels still are, but I love the hens and two roosters.
I'm hoping to find some cuckoo Marans hatching eggs in the spring, but they seem to be quite rare in Australia.
No worries! No I hadn't looked there, just did a quick search and there's some there. I'll have to keep an eye on it once we've got a broody again.
Thanks a lot for that![]()
