Hi-

My name is Liz Newman from Whitesboro, TX. As a new chicken owner I'm a little overwhelmed. I have 10 chickens ranging from 6 to 9 weeks old. Started with 6--added 2 more--then added 2 more. I think I'm addicted! I have 4 lavender orpingtons, 2 chocolate orpingtons, 2 Leghorns, and 2 Barred Rocks. So far 2 are roosters...didn't plan on that, but we'll go with it for now. IT IS TIME...for a chicken coop. Help me out here...chicken coop versus chicken tractor. I'd rather a tractor to move around, but can't seem to find a plan that I think is large enough. Thoughts please! Also, are you supposed to add Apple Cider Vinegar to their water and if so, how much? Need some advice! And THANKS!!!

Welcome to BYC. I think the cons against a tractor, is not very roomy and chickens pretty much have to stay in a bent over position. Also easy for a predator to burrow underneath, and for bigger ones, to just turn the whole unit over on its side. If you use poultry wire, even the smaller preds can tear right through it. You can beef that part up by using 1/2" hardware cloth instead.

Other greeters will be coming along and they will probably have differing view.

Hi Liz, welcome to BYC!

Congrats on your new flock! I'd vote for going with a coop, you can make them very secure and roomy. The tractor can come later if you want to take a few out at a time for some time in a garden or yard.

Have fun with your new birds, it's nice to have you here!
