I love sighthounds and would love to see pictures of yours. I unfortunately can’t have one because their prey drive is too intense for my chickens and cats.

I couldn't have been more thrilled when we finally stopped renting and bought a house on five acres. Like you, the first thing I did was buy a big dog (german shepherd). Then a couple years later we started a family, got 2nd GSD, and finally I got my chickens. Now I'm trying to get my husband used to the idea of goats and/or miniature cattle.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your chickens, dogs, and adventures on your new property. You are going to love having chickens!

With that many predators around you might want to consider an electric fence.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! Congrats on the new home! You will love having chickens and I wonder if you know just how attached to them you will get. That why I agree with others here. You need to make a predator proof coop and pen for your chickens with that many predators. Sure, the cockerel will sound the alarm and even fight off the predator, but not before you lose him and possibly more chickens. Then the predator will just keep coming back. You will save yourself a lot of heartache if you take precautions.

I strongly believe you need llamas. They are great protection for farm animals! Then you can get; goats, ducks, turkeys, horses and cows!
